Construction will soon begin on a new seniors housing complex in Swan River, Manitoba after a sod turning ceremony on Sunday.

The $5 million provincial government-funded housing project will accommodate seniors, First Nation and Métis families.

The new 26-unit development will replace the Crestview Courts — an apartment building owned by Manitoba Housing that was destroyed by fire in 2010.

The proposed design incorporates mobility-enhanced features, and includes five one-bedroom units and 21 two-bedroom units. In 13 units, the rent charged will be related to income.

Construction is expected to begin in August.
